Roberto Rossellini’s Journey to Italy is a benchmark in cinema, although seldom seen. Embroiled in controversy upon its release, due to industry gossip surrounding an affair between the director and its star, Ingrid Bergman, it was quietly pulled from theaters. The introspective story involves Katherine (Bergman) and Alexander Joyce: married for eight years, they’re waking up to the reality that they no longer share passion for each other. When fate brings them an opportunity to travel to Naples, instead of vacationing together, they go their separate ways. Katherine takes in the atmosphere of the city and the countryside, while Alexander drinks himself into oblivion and peruses women. While apart, they both learn about themselves and their place in the world. Considered a masterpiece of Italian cinema, Journey to Italy is a heartrending work of emotion and spirituality in the guise of an existential travelogue.
