This slice-of-life biopic from the Oscar-winning John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) chronicles Jimi Hendrix’s formative 1966-1967 period in London. André Benjamin of OutKast renders an uncanny performance of Jimi, capturing his swagger, his effortless cool, and most importantly, his voice.This doppelganging screen presence, combined with veteran session musician Waddy Wachtel’s guitar playing, creates the transformation of the iconic Jimi. Even though rights to Hendrix’s actual recordings weren’t granted, it’s quite satisfying. The film, “edited with the stop-and-start rhythms of a serpentine Hendrix guitar solo…succeeds where many music biopics falter,” says Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, and “makes you appreciate what a life it was—impossibly short and impossibly brilliant”.
