Dir: Alfonso Cuaron / 2013 / US & UK / English / 91 minutes / DCP
Winner of 7 Oscars, including Best Director, Gravity is the newest masterwork by acclaimed director Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien). Using up-to-the-second filmmaking technology, for whose invention Cuaron had to wait 5 years from the time he conceived the idea of the film with his co-screenwriter and son, Jonas Cuaron,Gravity is much more than stunning imagery and a truly breathtaking experience (even in 2D, the format in which OFS is screening it). The film follows the story of Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock in an unforgettable performance), a rookie astronaut on her maiden voyage, and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), her veteran teammate, who are the lone survivors of their shuttle crew when an unexpected explosion hurls a debris storm inescapably into their path. Now stranded without their craft and with their oxygen supply rapidly depleting, Ryan and Matt must figure out how to survive and, hopefully, how to get home. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone declares, “Cuaron is a true visionary. In tandem with the Bullock tour de force… he turns Gravity into a thing of transcendent beauty and terror. It’s more than a movie. It’s some kind of miracle.”
