Gloria is a comedic drama about a woman in her 50s who is determined to live life to the fullest. Divorced for 12 years, Gloria is alone but not lonely in her home that once housed her children, now grown and gone. Not content in her solitary status, however, she hangs out at a local gathering for middle-aged singles, searching for the meaningful companionship she feels she deserves. At first glance Gloria is nothing to notice in her unflattering ’80s eyeglasses and mundane haircut, but it’s her spirit that shines. This is what attracts Rodolfo, a man similar in age who is not as comfortable in his own skin as Gloria by any means, but he does adore her, which is something. As the romance blossoms and she begins to have second thoughts, a new incarnation of Gloria’s spirit emerges—one of an independent woman who is able stand on her own alone. Betsy Sharkey of The Los Angeles Times calls Gloria “a perfect film about the very imperfect world of a divorced woman of a certain age.”
