Fright Club: DAWN OF THE DEAD

1978’s classic Dawn of the Dead is arguably the definitive zombie movie. George Romero’s sequel to his hallmark Night of the Living Dead begins where that film ends and creates a claustrophobic symphony of terror that overflows with flesh eating ghouls, frenetic chaos, and a myriad of consumer goods. There’s horrifying social commentary, but also a depraved motorcycle gang and an undead Hari Krishna. Wrapped in an atmospheric soundtrack by noise rock gods Goblin, we root for our hapless heroes who may or may not make it out of consumer heaven alive. Super scary and epic in scale, the original Dawn of the Dead is a zombie movie for the ages. Accept no substitutes. And don’t forget, “When there’s no room left in Hell the dead will walk the Earth.”

“Dawn of the Dead” is one of the best horror films ever made — and, as an inescapable result, one of the most horrifying. It is gruesome, sickening, disgusting, violent, brutal and appalling. It is also (excuse me for a second while I find my other list) brilliantly crafted, funny, droll, and savagely merciless in its satiric view of the American consumer society. Nobody ever said art had to be in good taste.” – Roger Ebert
