DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

Dear White People

Set in the microcosm of an Ivy League campus, the satire Dear White People confronts the subject of racism, focusing on the school’s marginalized, but boisterous, minority population. “Racism is over in America” according to the clueless white dean, proving how detached the college administration is. Sam, who hosts the popular radio show from which the film takes its title, wants to inflame the masses with her controversial tirades on racial hypocrisy that are as biting as they are illuminating. Her cutting words echo throughout the lives of a myriad of characters that go about their college days split between assimilating with the masses and embracing their true selves. A.O. Scott of the New York Times says, “You want to see this movie, and you will want to talk about it afterward, even if the conversation feels a little awkward. If it doesn’t, you’re doing it wrong.”  Dir.: Justin Simien / 2014 / US / 100 min /DCP
