For those who weren’t here during the ‘90s, the storied “Olympia music scene” can seem like a mythic golden age of DIY expression and untrammeled creativity. This year, we have a real treat in store for you – Try This At Home, a documentary about the 1999 and 2001 YoYo-A-GoGo music festivals. YoYo-A-GoGo was a periodic volunteer-run festival, spearheaded by Pat Maley of YoYo Records, that celebrated indie music and the communities that were formed among the musicians, Labels, and fans in a pre-Internet, pre-file-sharing age of mail order-based networks. Thanks to the tireless efforts of filmmakers Elina Shatkin, Cris Dupont, and Thomas Logoreci, every single one of the 1999 YoYo-A-GoGo performers were recorded, and Try This At Home presents many of them as a loving time capsule from that era and testament to the still-inspiring power of the true DIY ethic – taking a chance and making your own creative statement in your own community, no matter where that may be. You won’t want to miss the electrifying and moving live performances, including the Make-Up, the Mountain Goats, Negativland, and the late Elliott Smith. And if you were here in ’99 or ’01, you might even see yourself on the big screen!
Closing Night is sponsored by… Rainy Day Records!
