César Chávez (played by Michael Peña), a quietly powerful, pioneering labor leader and dedicated pacifist, refusing to be bullied, changed history one step at a time and inspired millions from all walks of life, who had never worked a farm, to fight for social justice. This fictionalized film shows Chavez multilayered, torn between family and the struggle for a living wage and dignity for exploited farm workers. Using archival footage fused with dramatic sequences, the story is briskly told. Failing to make headway leafleting, Chavez loads up his eight kids and wife Helen (America Ferrara) to work in the fields by day, holding organizing meetings by night, building coalitions. When Reagan’s California makes it illegal to say “huelga” (strike) in the fields, Helen screams it with chilling passion. Dolores Huerta (Rosario Dawson) works with them, forming what becomes the United Farm Workers. Bogdanovich (John Malkovich) portrays a complicated composite character: grape grower, major landowner, and immigrant. Advocating boycotts and peaceful protests, Chávez begins a 25-day hunger strike to bring growers and workers to the table…a subject that reaches across time.
