Feminist director Lizzie Borden made her mark on the film world with the realistic prostitution drama Working Girls and the bizarre, voyeurism themed Love Crimes, but she may be most famous for her 1983 debut feature Born in Flames, a searing sci-fi tale set in a bleak near future. Taking place ten years after a peaceful revolution, everyone in the US is now created equal, with some exceptions of course. When women and minorities are quietly released from their hard earned jobs, no one seems take notice. Enter a number of underground groups that attempt to stand up for the cause. No one listens until a prominent leader is murdered, and anger explodes into societal chaos. But plot is only a small part of Born in Flames, a cinematic cry for revolution on screen and off. A product of the turbulent times in which it was made, its rebellious, politically charged message of outsider revolt ushered in an era of independent cinema that still exists today.
