Angst

Horror

1983 / Austria / in German with English subtitles / 75 minutes / Format: DCP

Directed by: Gerald Kargl

Print Source: Cult Epics

Before Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, there was Angst—the hallmark of serial killer films. Originally released in 1983, this intense psychological thriller has rarely been seen, due to censoring and banishment in several countries. The story takes place in the mind of a psychopath. Just released from prison, he begins stalking a family of three, living in a secluded home. Audiences witness everything from his point of view, including his thoughts, which are illustrated by a disturbing voice-over. We are fully immersed in the mind of the killer, while he carries out his brutal crimes. Featuring an eerie atmosphere, creepy soundtrack, and innovative camerawork, the existence of Angst was a shadowy myth in genre circles until the notorious filmmaker, Gaspar Noé, revealed it to be a major influence in his work.
