Above and Below delves into the lives of people living outside the margins of traditional society. April, a former soldier, wanders the remote and rocky slopes of Utah in a spacesuit—part of a program attempting to create a future mission to Mars. Rick and Cindy live underground in the storm drains below Las Vegas, sketching out a normal life before each oncoming rainstorm washes it away. David, who resides in the desert outside a small California town, forms messages to God out of assorted refuse found on the sandy plain. Each subject illustrates their experiences in their own words, in a poetic, intersecting collage, as dreams of the starry skies merge into comforting, subterranean darkness. A surreal journey into lives on the fringe, Above and Below feels like sci-fi, but it’s real life. Peter DeBruge of Variety says it “ranks among the year’s most remarkable cinematic discoveries.”
