Volunteers are the heart of OFS! Volunteering is a great way to meet people, and give back to the Olympia arts community. Plus, you get a free popcorn and movie pass every shift you work! Some people commit to working a regular shift every week, while others prefer the flexibility of ticketing. You could also decide to just work the concerts, or even sit on the Board of Directors!
Every movie that we screen (roughly 15 per week) is staffed by volunteers. There are two ticketers, two concessionaires, one lobby supervisor, and one to two projectionists. That adds up to almost a hundred volunteers, but that doesn’t even include: program distributors, gallery curators, housekeepers, signpainters, committees, program writers, and much more! There’s also the annual film festival, our busiest (and funnest!) time of the year. So sign up, and volunteer for the most exciting arts organization in the known universe!
REGULAR POSITIONS:
Box Office: If you are interested in volunteering in the box office, simply come by the theater and check out the volunteer sign-up board. Find an open slot on the ticketer schedule, and leave you name and number. You will be trained by the Lobby Supervisor when you show up for your shift. The shift starts 45 minutes before show time, and ticketers help clean up the lobby and auditorium prior to opening up the box office. This is good for folks who are unable to commit to a weekly shift.
Concessions: Dole out the treats and sweets to everyone’s delight. Become trained to make popcorn, coffee, sell candy, do elementary math, and maintain a constant sincere smile. Must come 1 hour before events and stay around 1/2 hour or so to clean up (usually a total of 1 & 1/12 hours). Weekly shifts are ideal or be a sub.
Lobby Supervisor: Our most precious volunteer! Lobby Supes (as we call them) set up lobby for the volunteers, hold the keys, make the announcements, and stick around for the duration of the screening. Must be comfortable handing money.
SPECIAL SHIFTS/ AS NEEDED
We also need help in the form of office volunteers, database managers, flier designers, street crew (putting up fliers), community outreach, program writers, Board of Directors secretary, and more. Inquire with the volunteer coordinator about specific needs.
