A Summer’s Tale (re-release/newly restored)

September 6 – 11 A Summer’s Tale Sat 9/6 4:00; Sun 9/7 5:00; Mon 9/8 9:00; Tue 9/9 6:30; Wed 9/10 6:30; Thu 9/11 4:00 & 9:00 Dir: Eric Rohmer / 2014 / France / French with English subtitles / 113 min / DCP One of the founders of the French New Wave of the 1960s, filmmaker Eric Rohmer helped pave the way for cinema as art. During his prolific career, he specialized in stories of life and romance that appeared light on the surface, but were actually brimming with depth and lessons about who we are. A Summer’s Tale is no exception, as we meet Gaspard, a guy in his early twenties who is spending his summer at a beach resort. He intends to meet up with his tentative girlfriend, Lena, but she is nowhere to be found. Over the course of the film numerous scenarios transpire as a romantic juggling act plays out in a delicate procession that feels like a clear and concise sketch of the sexual politics that can permeate young adult life. Originally released overseas in 1996, this is the newly restored, American debut of A Summer’s Tale. Glenn Kenny of Rogerebert.com says, “Having a heretofore-unseen work by Rohmer in a movie theatre is as salutary as basking in a ray of June sunshine.”
