LOVE & MERCY

Love & Mercy is one of those rare music biopics that manages to avoid getting mired in the genre’s hoary clichés, largely because it focuses on two brief periods in the life of Beach Boy leader and musical genius Brian Wilson, (Paul Dano and John Cusack, respectively). Beginning in the mid-’60s, in the wake of the Beach Boys’ ascent to worldwide fame, Wilson convinces the band to replace him on their world tour so he can focus on the creation of his masterpiece, Pet Sounds. We are treated to a look into Wilson’s never-ending quest to “play the studio” and translate the music in his head into densely-layered sonic collages and indelible pop songs. We also see the damage wreaked by Wilson’s abusive father, always hovering disapprovingly on the margins. Cutting to the ‘80s, we now see Wilson the recluse, drugged and dominated by his manipulative therapist Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). While shopping for a new Cadillac, Wilson befriends salesperson Melinda Ledbetter, who starts to help him free himself from Landy and begin to heal.
