In SON OF THE SHEIK, Valentino plays an unusual dual roll, both the Sheik and his son. Vilma Banky costars. SON OF THE SHEIK was Valentino’s last film. The star died of a sudden infection two weeks before the general release of the film, while he was on a nationwide promotion tour. The film was a huge hit with audiences and critics have deemed it the greatest work of the actor’s career. Valentino’s death, coupled with the film release, became one of the greatest media events of the era, with 100,000 people lining the funeral procession in New York City. A riot broke out at the funeral home. There were even reports of female fans so despondent that they committed suicide. Dir: George Fitzmaurice / 1926 / USA / 68 min / DCP

AlloyOrchestra

Alloy Orchestra – “The best in the world at accompanying silent films.” Roger Ebert

ALLOY ORCHESTRA is a three person musical ensemble featuring Terry Donahue – Junk percussion, musical saw, accordion, Ken Winokur – Director, percussion, clarinet, and Roger C. Miller – Keyboard (of Mission of Burma). Performing at prestigious film festivals and cultural centers in the US and abroad, Alloy has helped revive some of the great masterpieces of the silent era. An unusual combination of found percussion and state-of-the-art electronics gives the Orchestra the ability to create any sound imaginable.

Utilizing their famous “rack of junk” and electronic synthesizers, the group generates beautiful music in a spectacular variety of styles. They can conjure up a French symphony or a simple German bar band of the 20′s. The group can make the audience think it is being attacked by tigers, contacted by radio signals from Mars or swept up in the Russian Revolution.
