SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry

Mary Dore’s newest documentary takes viewers back 40+ years to the origins and heady early years of what is now called “second-wave” feminism, when women, many of whom had been steadily working in the civil rights, anti-war, and other radical movements of the time, began to take action for themselves and demand equal opportunities, reproductive rights, and an end to stifling gender role stereotypes. Featuring interviews with over two dozen women who spent those years at the front of the marches and in the trenches, including Susan Brownmiller, Kate Millett, Rita Mae Brown, and Ellen Willis, the film also brings the period back to life with plenty of well-chosen archival footage, while not shying away from the controversies and schisms that splintered the movement along racial, class, and sexual orientation lines. Alan Scherstuhl of the Village Voice enthuses, “One of the year’s best films, Mary Dore’s She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry is an urgent, illuminating dive into the headwaters of second-wave feminism, the movement that — no matter what its detractors insist — has given us the world in which we live.” Dir: Mary Dore / 2014 / US / 92 min / DCP
