ROSEWATER

January 9 – 15

ROSEWATER

Jon Stewart’s directorial debut, Rosewater, is based on the 118 days that Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari was held in an Iranian prison charged with espionage after he returned to his native country to report on the 2009 election that culminated in the youth-led Green Wave and subsequent government crackdown. Bahari is subjected to solitary confinement and unrelenting interrogation by an expert in psychological torture he names “Rosewater” for his unmistakable scent. With vivid depictions of the swirl of events during the heady days of the election and a central power play between Gael Garcia Bernal (Bahari) and Kim Bodnia (Rosewater), both at the top of their game, Stewart has “made a movie of the moment that doesn’t feel like a sententious ‘issue’ drama, and is all the more affecting for it.” — Scott Foundas, Variety.
