Force Majeure

In the black comedy Force Majeure a family unravels after a freak accident. Thomas and Ebba and their two young sons are off on a ski vacation at an exclusive resort in the Alps. Everything seems fine—the only tension revolving around Thomas’ constant attention to his phone—until an avalanche careens towards the resort while the family is eating breakfast one morning. It just misses crushing the chalet, but the damage is done. In the midst of their close call, Thomas fled for his life, and left his loved ones to a certain doom. Upon his return everything appears normal, but a stated tension fills the air, which will gradually eat away at their happy family bond. Stephen Holden of The New York Times calls Force Majeure “a brilliant, viciously amusing takedown of bourgeois complacency and gender stereotypes.”
