On April 30, 1975 the U.S. finally left Saigon and put an end to our involvement in Vietnam. After over a decade of war, the country was so Vietnam-weary that virtually no one asked about what happened at the very end. Nearly 40 years later, filmmaker Rory Kennedy (daughter of the late Robert Kennedy) revisits those last fraught days and pieces together a truly remarkable story. Denied evacuation funding by Congress and official permission by an ambassador deep in denial about the North Vietnamese Army’s sweeping success in its final push south, the Americans remaining in Saigon had to resort to incredible acts of resourcefulness, subterfuge, and sacrifice, not to mention heartbreaking choices, to try to help their South Vietnamese colleagues, friends, and family get out before it was too late. The AV Club’s Mike D’Angelo says, “Last Days In Vietnam is a clear-eyed, scrupulous account, gripping from start to finish.”
