Roman Polanski’s newest Russian nesting doll adaptation of David Ives’ Tony award-winning 2010 play of the same name, inspired by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s 1870 novel Venus in Furs, centers on Parisian playwright-director Thomas (Mathieu Amalric). At the end of a frustrating day of auditions for the female lead Wanda von Dunayev, Thomas is preparing to leave the theater for the evening, however, one last actress named Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) wanders in from the storm and stuns him with her thorough portrayal of Wanda. What begins as an impromptu audition escalates to a seductive role-playing that blurs reality and entraps Thomas into a deep infatuation. Jonathan Romney of The Guardian calls it “taut, witty and…a sly dismantling of the sexual politics of performance.”
