Directed by: Spike Jonze / 2013 / USA / 126 minutes / DCP
Acclaimed filmmaker Spike Jonze invites moviegoers into his colorful mind once more with Her, a story that meditates on the meanings of love and life through a contemporary, innovative lens. Set in the near future in Los Angeles, the film centers on Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), an introverted writer on the brink of divorce from his high school sweetheart (Rooney Mara). Out of loneliness and curiosity, Theodore takes a chance on purchasing a new artificial intelligence operating system marketed as having the ability to grow intellectually and emotionally as it interacts with people. His female OS, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), quickly becomes a confidant and cheerleader, allowing Theodore to expand his saddened, narrowed view of the world as he explores life anew alongside his untraditional romantic interest. The complications that eventually arise from their bond, however, teaches Theodore even more. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calls Jonze “a visionary whose lyrical, soulful meditation on relationships of the future cuts to the heart of the way we live now.”
