Dir: Bennett Miller / 2005 / US / 114 min / 35 mm film
In the memory of the late, great actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, OFS presents Capote, the film that won him an Academy Award. Set during the writing of In Cold Blood—which would become known as the first literary true crime novel—the film delves into the meticulous research that went into Truman Capote’s documenting the senseless murder of the Clutter family. Focusing on the author’s at times questionable practices in gathering information, most notably his conflicted relationship with the accused killers, Capote is revealed as a complicated figure at once certain of his talent but at odds with human integrity. Don’t miss this rare 35 mm film print showing of one of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s best films. Roger Ebert said, “Capote is a film of uncommon strength and insight….Philip Seymour Hoffman’s precise, uncanny performance as Capote doesn’t imitate the author so much as channel him, as a man whose peculiarities mask great intelligence and deep wounds.”
