Inequality for All
Dir.: Jacob Kornbluth / 2013 / US / 89 min / Digital Cinema
If you’re working harder than ever before only to fall further and further behind but lack the economic expertise to understand why, Robert Reich has a story for you. Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Labor, Reich has made his life’s work the promulgation of the idea that it is the middle class and its consumption of goods and services that are the real economic engine and job creators in the U.S., not the wealthy, as the rich and powerful would have you believe. As in An Inconvenient Truth, a lecture about a looming danger to our way of life is the backbone of Inequality for All, but unlike that film, Reich is a dynamic, witty, impassioned advocate of facts and analysis that are well illustrated by engaging and memorable graphics. Director Jacob Kornbluth combines material from Reich’s book, Aftershock, with the class he teaches at U.C. Berkeley, “Wealth & Poverty,” to flesh out Reich’s message that the disparity between classes in the U.S. right now is the same as prior to the Great Depression, and the prosperous golden 1950s coincided with the lowest class disparity, a message more timely now than ever. Susan Wloszczyna of rogerebert.com enthuses, “[I]f you like your movie stars to be smart, engaging, well-spoken, self-deprecating and Danny DeVito-size, you couldn’t do much better than this leading authority on economics who served under presidents Ford, Carter and Clinton. Even a charm monster like George Clooney probably couldn’t make ‘Inequality for All’… any more persuasive and intermittently humorous.”

Join three downtown congregations in a discussion following the film s that we might work together to realize a community where the American dream is possible for everyone.  Don’t miss tis special one-time screening!
