’71

May 1 -7
’71
In the tense drama ’71 an inexperienced soldier must survive horrific circumstances. Set in Belfast, Ireland during a violent conflict, Gary Hook is part of a small troop of British soldiers assigned to keep tensions at bay between warring factions. As the men go about their duties on the war-torn streets, inflamed tempers flare into violence, causing Hook’s regimen to scatter, leaving him to fend for himself. From this moment on, Hook must find a way to survive the abject circumstances, while shrewdly searching for allies that will help him beat the odds and escape a living hell with his life intact. An alarming historical document as much as a taut thriller, ’71 is an eye-opening account of recent past events. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times says, “‘71 is a tense thriller from Britain that so adroitly joins physical intensity, emotional authenticity, and political acuity that you may find yourself forgetting to take a breath.” Dir: Yann Demange / 2014 / UK / 99 min / DCP
