20,000 Days on Earth

20,000 Days on Earth
Dir.: Iain Forsyth, Jane Pollard / 2014 / UK / 97 min / DCP

Lead singer of The Bad Seeds and cult hero Nick Cave is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. In the insightful documentary 20,000 Days on Earth, Cave’s elusive guise is pierced, exposing the true artist and the origin of his musical output. Not so much a rock documentary as an imagined day-in-the-life, we follow the artist on one of the more productive days of his existence. We observe as Cave records in studio, compares notes with artist friends, and even sees a therapist, all while his running voiceover reveals an internal monologue, uncovering clues into his creative process, as well as the man behind the super-cool persona. Visual and inventive, 20,000 Days on Earth is a fascinating journey into the mind of an artist at his creative peak. David Lewis of the San Francisco Chronicle says, “beautifully scripted and edited; It’s right up there with the best rock documentaries.”
